United States Mail Lock 1812
Howdy folks - newbe here looking for some info.
Can anybody tell me if the 1812 is an actual date or a lockbox or stagecoach number or something? I found this at a tavern site that dates back to the late 1700's. I really like the little eagle stamped in the upper left corner. The face plate is made out of brass I think - the rest must be a different metal - its all pitted. When I found it I thought it was just a hunk of iron - until I cleaned it up a bit. The face cleaned up pretty good.
Also wondering if anybody would know wht kind of value this would have.
Thanks for looking,
Davy

Hi all, can anyone help with the meanings behind the markings on these little CHUBB padlocks. Obviously they are used officially - possibly mail bags or satchels????? Interesting that they come...
