    Default Small Mosler Safe

Here is a recent acquisition. A small Mosler safe in about the 3500-4000 lb range. Timelock is not original to the safe but added later and done very well. Serial number 56061. If anyone out there has records to indicate when this Mosler was manufactured based on the serial number I would appreciate it.

    I have been advised :

The first serial number Mosler used in 1886 was 50717, and the first used in 1887 was 78657, so I'd say this (56061) was made in 1886.

MOSLER SAFE SERIAL NUMBERS CROSS REFERENCED TO MANUFACTURING DATES

The following list indicates the first serial number assigned at the beginning of each year. From 1946 through 1989 all serial numbers were suffixed with a dash and an additional number(s) which indicated the number of a specific unit manufactured in that lot group (i.e., 12345-52 = the fifty-second unit built under lot number 12345 during 1956). Prior to 1946, the numbers were referred to as “handle” numbers - usually stamped on the handle of the safe. Note that serial numbers beginning with 30,000 are used on safes being manufactured at Orangeburg, SC; and no longer include “dash” numbers.

There are many other markings that have been used at one time or another and also technical modifications introduced at various dates which can also date the locks.
