    Default Herring Lock

The attached was a recent ebay purchase. What can you tell me about the lock. For example, is it complete, does it have a model name, what is its age, what type of safe was it in, what is the tpi of the spindle that fits the drive cam?

    Thank you!

    Default Dexter

The lock is a DEXTER . The lock was on a jewelry or banker chest / safe. The dial is pinned onto the cam of this lock. The lock started production about 1870. Hope this helps Tim

Is there any more available information about Dexter locks? This one appears to have a dial spindle that goes directly into the drive cam. Others I’ve seen have offset dials.

    Thank you.

Here is a typical heavy Herring bankers chest showing dual control locks. Offset dials (indirect drive) became popular with several lock and safe makers during the 1870's-80's. Innovations like these were virtually always a reaction to the current attack methods of the time. The locks on this chest are indirect drive, identified by the large vertical block bolted on the left side of the locks.
