Default Chatwood heavy duty little box

Anyone got any idea what it would have been for?
no fixing holes, not a wall safe.

Doesn't look like a cash box either

Just a plate strongbox tom, all the major companies made them, If it had two locks I would have said it was for depositing keys with another bank but as is - just a nice strongbox.

Seen similar from Milners, hobb's, withers, and I think Whitfield but admittedly most were unnamed low end stuff- the Barrons patent box lock I have was off a similar unnamed box and I've also got a very nice precise milners box lock off one thats an incredibly fine pin gauge.
Seeing your second picture reminds me we had a boxfull of those brass fixing nuts and a couple of original 2-pin tools to fasten them, werent chatwoods though.

Think I reacted too fast on this Tom, the Milners and Hobb's were definitely comparable albeit bigger, but the more I've looked at your Chatwood it is exceptionally heavy construction for its size, have to admit most were bigger and lightweights in comparison. The small scrapped one I had the lock off had similar looking hinges but strangely they were cast in brass IIRC.

Go to the top of the class Huw!
Yes indeed it has heavy brass hinges, painted black.
