Default "French armoire" lock - can someone help dating this

Have offered to make a key for a friend's recently acquired "armoire". I'm used to working with English locks, which are normally pretty basic. This one is also pretty basic, but the "wheel" is interesting - it only really seems to cover the locking mechanism as far as I can see. Any idea when these style of lacks date from?
