    Default Boat cabin lock.

    Hi all,

Help.... I'm trying to fit keys to this T handle lock from a Grenfell boat cabin.

I can't disassemble it, can't impression it, and can't pick it.

has 5 pin tumblers with rounded bottoms.

taking the set screw out doesn't accomplish anything.

I think it must screw together somewhere but because it has
all been chromed I can't tell where.

Looking into the set screw hole I can see a relief cut into the plug
both above and below the screw so I think that would allow the
key to turn only a quarter turn in each direction.

I don't have the rest of the lock.

Just wondering if anyone has ever fit a key or could offer any advise
on how to get it apart or fit a key.

The blank I used was for an arco bank bag I think.....ilco 1131R but
modified considerably...shortened, lowered, new shoulder created
farther along the blade from the original, lower orig shld stop ground off.

I hope I can get these pics to load.

    Thanks for any help.

You say that you don't have the rest of the lock, but I presume it is still existent, probably on the boat, or else there probably wouldn't be much point bothering with part of a lock.
it is probable that if the lock can be easily disassembled, you need to turn the central plug slightly first.
this can be done after picking, but this is of course dependent on the lock being in working order, which we do not know.
you say you can't pick it. Are you a very experienced picker? If not them maybe you should ask a locksmith to try where you have been unsuccessful.

    Thanks for your reply Tom.

Yes, the rest of the lock is on the boat.

I've been locksmithing for about 18 years but I
suppose giving it to someone else to try picking
    would be a good option.

I don't see how picking it and turning the plug will
allow it to be disassembled but you may be correct.

I was thinking there may be a key-in-the-knob type cyld
in it but don't know for sure.

If it was picked I could maybe sight it and along with impressioning
    could fit a key.

I think the plug is larger than the hole in the T handle so I
don't think the plug comes out the front...but ??? if it does
how would you get it back inside...how would you hold up
    the top pins??

the T part may thread onto the cylindrical parts but there is
probably a roll pin holding them together or they would probably
unthread. the pin, if there is hidden by the chrome plating.

maybe I'll try another blank today.

I would assume the function of the screw on the side is to retain the core whilst the key is turning it. In the UK this product would have wafers not pins, so that may change everything.
With your 18 years experience and the determination which you have to sort this out, my main thought would be that it is damaged if you cant get it open.

Yes the screw may capture the plug and also limit rotation.
Owner tells me the boat was made in 1955 and the lock make is
Perko Florida. The modern name being just Perko.
I'll see if there's any info on the web about it.

If that lock has been exposed to the elements for 62 years, the mechanism may well be seized up and might never operate! Perko, Inc. is still in business, sold by places like West Marine, see catalog at the link:

    Thanks for that Pete.
I sent an inquiry to Perko and they asked for pics
so I sent them and am now waiting to hear back.

The bolt moves, the plug twists a bit like normal, and
the 5 pins are moving so I'm hopeful it's OK inside.

I hope they can send some blueprint like pics of
    how it's assembled.

    Just to wrap this up...

The customer turned out to not be the boat owner.
I asked him to bring me the whole lock but he brought
in a latch that was unrelated to the handle.
He seemed to be just as confused as me.
I never saw any proof that it was a perko.
He took the handle and I haven't heard from him again.

    weird
