    I'm guessing it may be ornamental and perhaps not an actual working key.

    German / North Italian strongbox key. 1750 - 1850 in date. Typical example, quite nice.

    I think this key is earlier, probably 1600-1700 strongbox key. It's got a very intricate key bit. Very nice key.

    Recently saw it on eBay.fr priced at Euro 500 (?)

    great key,
    it is from northern italy or austria,
    between 16th and 18th century,
    it was mostly used for a furniture.
