Western States Atomic Vault Company was formed in 1954 and built a secure "atomic bomb proof" storage area in a former curved railroad tunnel near Glenwood, California. Ownership has changed a few times; I believe the facility is now owned by Iron Mountain, a document storage (and document destruction) company.

The same company (which was originally Iron Mountain Atomic Storage Corporation) owns a storage facility in an old iron mine near Linlithgo, New York). Aside from its unusual location, the door has a bit of history. According to the company, a "28-ton, triple-time lock vault door seals off the entrance to the records facility. Knaust [the founder] paid $1 to obtain the door from a bankrupted Ohio bank, but paid more than $20,000 to have it shipped.”

In the first message of this thread a circular vault in Lynwood (CA) was shown. In 1980, Jeff Bridges starred in a movie "The American Success Company" which shows the interior of a circular vault. While these photos show a realistic-looking interior, I can't tell if it was just a set. This would seem to create several problems for an architect and/or manufacturer. For example, are the doors curved (a manufacturing headache) or flat? And the spaces are tapered which means you waste a bit of space with a rectangular box. But it looks cool.

MaxVaultage posted this in the Safes & Vaults versus Hollywood thread, I thought it highly appropriate for this thread as well:

The vault is quite attractive and dates to the 1960s. Two levels with a sweeping staircase. Glass day gate. The tunnel is much longer than the door is thick. On the far right is a cable, possibly for power, and on the left you can see two smaller cables next to the hinges, possibly for alarm circuits. The one sad thing is the vault door which has as much character as the bottom of a paint can. In the center there appears to be a Parma Antonio & Figli medallion. There are 12 locking bolts, half of what was common, and they don't appear to be very large.

This image appears on the web site for DISItaly (http://www.disitaly.it/custodia.php) but it might just be a stock image rather than their actual vault.

Western States Atomic Vault Company was mentioned earlier, there is a short newsreel on Youtube. Search for "Atomic Mountain Vault".

Here is another round vault. I'm certain this is computer-generated imagery. The box doors seem too uniform, and it looks like a grand waste of valuable vault space. It's pretty, though!
