    My best guess is that the key is to a cabinet or other piece of furniture. Your key is called a barrel or pipe key. Most furniture locks used this type of key, although admittedly some padlocks too.

    Default Quatrefoil rare design

    I have discovered this is a rare and old key design referred to as quatrefoil.

    yes, you are right, quatrefoil is a very old design,
    but your key is much younger
