I would assume that the alarm system produced similar alarm situations multiple times in the previous weeks, maybe with the help of an insider, maybe because it was easy for outsiders to trigger without leaving obvious traces. And was therefore partially ignored, aside from: 'ok, we have to install a new one'.

There are just too many coincidences.

Maybe that approach would be fine for the local Scout hut or fish & chip shop but not for a premise protecting what this one did.

I bet there was a formal mou (memo of understanding) between the insurers and the safe deposit place to 100% tie down what sort of multi layer defences they have to have in place at any given time of day or night. Repeat calls to the police over the preceding weeks would give the police some excuse for lack of attendance but not the actual deposit building for failing to rectify. Heads may roll

Two of the company directors (one of which is also the manager) can't be found. And they are from Sudan, which does not have an extradition treaty (with the US, at least; I don't know about the UK but a quick Google search suggested it's contentious at best).

Easy to be wise after the event but anybody who entrusts squillions of dollars to a Sudanese managed company deserves all they get!

It's not about the country where the managers were born.

    Cf. "HEROS" 2006: http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heros_Unternehmensgruppe
Managers of a German security transport company (market leader at that time) took around 540 Million EUR from their customers.

I just meant that if I were doing something like that I would base myself somewhere like Sudan.

BBC reports the hole is 45cm (17.7 inches) wide.

Another article includes an image of the hole from the inside:

Wow have to agree with that! It must have taken them ages. Lucky there wasn't an SLS Gem on the other side of the wall..
