I've had this for some time but can't recall from where I got it.

    Default Useful link

    This is a good link:

    http://www.met.police.uk/hatton-garden-burglary/

I think we already know most of it but it summarises it all quite succinctly and doesn't repeat any of the earlier inaccuracies.

You know they're scratching their heads for anything when it goes on BBCs Crimewatch. I know the door wasn't an issue in that they successfully attacked the wall, but the fact it's still that old 1940s Chubb has amazed me more than anything else.

Does anybody ever upgrade walls to resist more modern threats? I know some doors and safes are upgraded. That is one reason why a maintenance contract can be so useful to the original supplier. Adding deflector plates and such stuff at a later date.

As a sort of special case there is the Bank of Japan. Their original vault was built in 1896. In 1932 they upgraded by building a new vault around the old one with a big York door. In this image the old vault door is visible in the background.

As for the original question, I don't remember ever hearing of wall upgrades.

A big part of modern security is the alarm system which is a lot easier to upgrade. We know how well that worked at Hatton Garden!

Love the big old doors and yes if I could afford a divorce I would have one !

The totally independant layers of electronic security measures at this place were compromised or deactivated, then steps in man with huuuge drill and brute force takes over. This stinks and has done since day one.

Another thought which I have is they may just have emptied the wrong deposit box and the authorities are the least of their worries. If Johhny 'big spuds' from Columbia has lost his collection of diamonds he will want them back, people will be on it for huge payments and people talk, especially when a blowtorch is applied to the soles of their feet !
