Stellite is actually a trademark and the link below takes you to a site which includes a directory of alloys. 50+ variants of Stellite are listed.

Talk about the more you find out the less you know !

I used to use tungsten welding rods to fill small holes. Tap them in, snap them off!

Fortunately I went back into the study and found a description of what was actually being done on a Herring vault door that had both the hard cast manganese iron plates and hardened 5 ply steel. They did in fact anneal the door to soften the hardened steel and broke out the manganese plates by hammer and punch. If I was as observant as Wylk is, I would have noticed the evidence of the paint scorching around the drilled holes where they took a torch to it. That still leaves Chatwood's ability to drill though the Ratner plate a mystery.

    Default Chatwood Interview c.1894

    Tom,

This is the front page of 35. This was scanned from film among the late
    Bill Stanton' papers.

A bank close to me in Bolton was once called Hardcastle Cross & Co. Within there was / is a Chatwood Bankers Steel Fort vault. Wonder if it still remains there

I don't know if anybody else can do anything with that image. I certainly can't! I really would be ineterested to see it, though, at higher resolution.

Not that good at computer 'stuff' but you could try putting the cursor over the image, right clicking then saving the image to your pictures.

View the picture from there and zoom in as required. I know a teenager could resolve this in a blink put none here at the moment.....

It would be really interesting to see details of this 12 patent safe - I havent heard of it before...but the image needs to be scanned at a higher resolution because zooming in only makes it bigger, not clearer
