The Von Duprin "88" line of exit devices was introduced in 1955. This lock had the advantage of being reversible for both left or right hand doors as opposed to their earlier "A2" model which was handed. This lock is still made today, although contemporary touchbar devices like their "99" series are now much more popular than the older crossbar style. The VonDuprin name is a contraction of the original principals of the company, VONnegut Hardware Co., Henry DUpont and Carl PRINzler. VonDuprin is now part of Allegion plc, an international conglomerate registered in Dublin, Ireland:

The shape of the head is older than the last 25 years. So I would say 1955-1990. Maybe BBE can shead some light of some other tech that has been around longer than I have.

My first job as a locksmith was in 1969 and I had a lot of Von Duprin hardware in place at that job. Yours is older that any I worked on so probably is from the first few model years.
    BBE.
