    Safeman,

Good bit of info there and thanks for posting it.

I am not that sure what Mk my Bullion safe is. One of the bolts is stamped 78494 which safe 'guru' Mike Palmer dates as being from the mid 70's.

The other safe I had was a Mk 9 Bankers, not Mk8,which did have various plates within its doors that were stamped 'X-Ray'.

This may, or may not work, but I have attempted to post a pdf copy of the Tann Bankers Mk 9 ( 1X ) which gives details of the anti x-ray devices it had built into it.

Yes, that's the boy! Doubtless made for anybody poor who needed a safe of that quality so had to get an economy model. All the units from that epoch really strike a chord with me.

Huge old thing that is....... dont like to see safes chucked outside like that.

My experience is that things soon rust and sieze when exposed to the elements.

Cruelty to safes, cant abide it

The safe number 78494 was made late 1971 or early 1972 at the time
of the Mark 5 Series Bullion.

With regard to the references to X-Ray protection, I'm inclined towards the
theory that brochures carrying this extra statement were destined for the
US dealerships where the requirements for combination locks was almost
standard and where this might have carried some weight.

Only a theory but I am seeking verification from one of Tann's ex-dealers.

Appreciate your input on this. Somewhere I have a picture on the Mk 9 Bankers and a couple of shots of the internals. Hopefully I will be able to find and post them on here for other 'safe nuts' to view.

On the subject of top of the line stuff, does anyone have any photo's (not catalogue images) of any Hobbs progress G stuff ? it looks impressive in the catalogues so actual pictures would probably require a health warning for those of a nervous disposition and bibs to catch the drool ........

Re the ratner - I would guess that dates from the period when Ratner and Tann were both owned by Levys ?

Yes, it looks about that epoch. 1970s?

If there were keys with it it might be worth looking at but I doubt it. You would need a truck with a Hiab grip lift to move it. I should think the owner will end up having to pay to have it moved! Shame really, what a beauty for a retail jeweller!
