    Default open safe no combo.

What does it matter how much the safe costs? The back of the door has nine fasteners securing the cover on. I dont have the safe yet so cant take pics. Thanks for the help though.

Because there is always a possibility (albeit fairly minute) that you are buying a scrap metal box.

I once paid £10 for a smallish (modern) safe on the basis that if I could not repair the door and replace the lock, I could still weigh it in as scrap and recoup my basic costs.

Thanks for your concern. I have a knowledge of the history of this safe and knew the previou owners twice removed. It is a working operational safe.

Default Old dominion safe with no combo

I finally received my dominion safe with the door open but locked, with no combination. I now have the back cover of the door off, and am able to get the wheels all to line up and able to unlock the door,(after much tinkering) but can not change the combination with the change instructions that came with the safe. I have the key and instructions but cant set a new combo. Can anybody give me some help?

    Hello,

Pictures of the dial, lock case and inside would help to identify it and give you the correct instructions. Is it a 3 wheel or 4 wheel lock?

It is a 4 wheel. I will send some pics later today. Thank you.

For some reason I am not able to attach pictures to this thread. Either my pics are to large or some thing.
Alexander.Wolf@tdsb.on.ca is my email. If you feel comfortable email me and then I could send you the pictures.

Yet another thought, would it also cause this sort of problem if he's trying to change a 4-wheel lock with a three-wheel change key? Perhaps a picture of the change key sitting on a ruler would help us determine if the right change key is being used.

Yes it does go without saying you need the right change key for the lock!

After you've correctly aligned the wheels and you carefully insert the key, look carefully- there is a 'wing' like projection on the key and a gap or wasted section just behind it- the key should go in so you see the wing just disappear into the cover and the wasted part should be aligned and seated perfectly in the hole in the cover. The hole then acts as the guide for the key to pivot as you turn it 90 degrees, and the wing acts as a stop inside once turned. With a 3 wheel key the whole lot will disappear behind the cover and prevent the key turning, and serious damage is the result if it's forced. I have a change key in my collection with 3 full twists from a military base where the guy was having a bit of trouble and decided pliers were the answer... no longer recognizable as a change key, but it would make a good corkscrew for removing wine corks...
