When commencing a day's production of general purpose locks, did one just select a standard key from a peg on the wall, make ten or so, and then use the next key in the row. I vaguely recall a top hat being filled with labels carrying the numbers of standard keys, and labels selected at random.

If made in batches, presumably some system was used to prevent one client receiving locks made from the same master!

Was rhere a standard procedure, or did everyone have their own system? Many thanks.
