    Default Chubb Key

    Hi Tom
Nice Chubb key you have there.
I have not seen one with the same turning like that but a very nice very nice example of Chubbs keywork.
I once had a Chubbs Detector Rim Deadlock of very early manufacture with two original keys, but they were quite plain in comparison with the turning on yours. Unfortunately, I sold the lock !!! what a mistake that was. Wish that I kept it now.

    Hello Tom,

Chubb seemed to have changed their design for the turning near to the bow on PIN keys, from three plain bands to a more fancy design when they moved to 128 Queen Victoria Street in about 1877. The attached photos agree with this rule of thumb with one exception, which must have been made around 1877. However, they retained the three plain bands for their PIPE keys well into the twentieth century. I wonder why the turning style, after 1877, was determined by whether it was for a pin or a pipe key?

    Karl.

Whats the item number please oldlock

I see that these are mostly bullet warded Chubb grille keys in the right hand picture as to the shank designs i.e the turned style I note some minor difference but as these blanks were more than likely bought in (stamped after key had been cut) there could have been a change in supplier, this is the most probable reason for the key turning differing
But then Its just a thought.
    Regards Anthony

    Default Chubb keys

Hi. Here are two Chubb SPC keys from my collection. The bow on the larger one is different than the ones pictured. Any idea as to what they were used for and when? Mid 1800's maybe?

The first key is probably for a padlock, and would have been for a master suited set of padlocks. 1851 - 1876 in date.

The second key would be 1835 - 1851 in date.

To think that I now actually need this key for one of my locks, I didn't at the time.

I hope the seller will re-list it sometime.
