    Thumbs up Carron Safe

    Hi Steve,

What you have is an Iron safe (Chest) made by Carron Iron Co, Stirlingshire, Scotland.
Your box will have had a round brass handle. There is a nice pic on the web site www.safeman.org.uk/

Incidentally, Carron's used to make gas fires....

Still to back trace Carron's, however, during October 1905 - October 1906, there was an infringement between Cannon, London over a trademark...

Your erm,,,iron chest was most certainly made pre 1900, perhaps as early as 1860.. (more research to follow)

I hope this gets your whistle whetted!

Ok Steve, not only have I opened an interesting theme, I can now give you a bit of history.

Carron Co were established in 1759. Their iron works opened 26th December 1760. Carrons name was taken from where they started. Carron River, Falkirk. Carron's eventually became one of the largest Iron foundrys in the UK, having a workforce of 2000 men...They were at the forefront of the iron revolution.
Quite interestingly....They were a manufacture of short range & barrel cannons. You may have heard the term Carronade, as in a carronade of cannon!

Carrons went into insolvency in 1982, they were taken over & now make Taps n kitchen ware......

Ok, we haven;t really answered your question on its age. I havn't found anything relating to Chests/safes/boxes.. so can only chuck a date of C1820 (ish) for your chest.

    I did cheat a bit using wikipedia.....http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/carron_company/
you will have to cut n paste the link.

Hope yall enjoy the history lesson

    Default Carron Valuation

    Good Morning Steve

In it's current form.. its value isnt very much, however, i would ask you to enquire to museums in the Falkirk Region, as they may be interested in bringing home something of local interest.

I suppose in a fully refurbished & working condition, well,, price really is what the buyer will stump up for it. My worst guess £30.. best guess....£30.. no i'm pretty sure that you could get a coupla hundred quid... you never know.

    Default Carron chest

    Hi Steve

I saw the Carron safe on ebay, strangely enough, the price was uncannily almost the same as my valuation.

Hope it sells for much more.
