I have the original print of this photograph and placed a copy of it at the end of the section on Edw.Tann & Son in my Safeman website all of which is Copyright.
To copy it for sale is a bit naughty but at least it may be viewed by a few more interested parties now. An interesting aside is that this huge piece of plant was moved on planks and rollers from the old factory in Hope Street to the new one in St.Stevens Road Old Ford about a mile away. The incised advert on the gable at the corner is still there today.
What is the machine? How much would that weigh?
It's amazing what you can move, once it is on rollers!
Wonder what Health & Safety would make of that moving method today !!!
A piece of machinery of that size and shape would be quite easy to move, and without risk. Seeing the photo reminded me of the time when we used to move large boats on greased ways and in particular, the time we moved a 30 ton yacht with a very deep keel and the point of balance right at the forward end of the very rounded keel.
I had a few more grey hairs after that boat was moved and safely blocked off. No elf' n' safety in those days. !!
I bet the rollers were shiny when they had finished.
