    Default R&E Scadi

I just bought an R&E Scadi with a key. The key turns a full 180 degrees, but the shackle won't release. It may be the wrong key as I purchased the lock on ebay. It appears to be a 4-disc mechanism. Are there any tricks to turning the discs one at a time so that I can check the key or the like?

You might simply have the wrong key (did the seller make any claim that the lock was working?), but there are some Scandinavian padlocks that had 'trap discs' inside - the idea being that if a theif tried to pick the lock, they would trip one of the trap discs, thus blocking the lock so that even the right key will not work anymore.

I do not know if R&E ever used this technology, however.

I am sure somebody who knows more about these locks than I do will be of more assistance.

Look into the keyway with a pen light and see if any of the discs are turned.....most likely the one that is operated by the tip of the key is turned, not letting the key go all the way in. I have see this happen a few times with Scandi locks. The key goes in almost all the way and it will turn but not unlock the lock......you can usually use a hand tool to realign the discs and get the lock working again. Once all the discs are back at the locked position, the proper key can go all the way in and open the lock.

Good luck with your new find!
