Beautiful 1700's French Key
Well I finally have a key to share worthy of your great site. This recent aquistion is from the Indy Lock Show this past weekend 4-17-10. Any help on it's history would be greatly appreciated. Could it be a masterpiece key??? It measures 6.25" x 2".

Very nice indeed. As to your question, it could although the term Masterpiece key is usually given to the Lantern design. The quality is however easily good enough for this to be a slightly later example.
Congratulations on acquiring such a fine key.

This is a great old key, and I have a simialr one with the lock. Some of the Warding cuts are made to give the Beard a visually balanced apperance. I believe the key is caste and is made from a highly tempered steel combination. The lock to this key is a heavy duty oblong case and Surface Mounted. The key has French design features. As for the date..it is very difficult to guess. Maybe late 16th early 17th Century. I will try and up load a scan of my key for comparison.
